Perfection took on a new meaning as the King Singer’s came to the University of the South November 19, 2015. The King’s Singers are one of the most premier a cappella groups in the world. They originated at King’s College in Cambridge, England, in 1968. Since then, they have consistently been one of the most revered a cappella groups with over 125 concerts per year. The group always has six male members, ranging from counter tenors to basses. Community members, students, and faculty attended the concert in All Saints’ Chapel. The six-man group charmed the audience with charisma, smiles, and, of course, wonderful singing voices. The repertoire for this performance included: classical songs, The Lord’s Prayer, regional songs, and folk songs.
The current ensemble consists of: David Hurley (countertenor 1), Tim Wayne-Wright (countertenor 2), Julian Gregory (tenor), Christopher Bruerton (baritone 1), Christopher Gabbitas (baritone 2), and Jonathan Howard (bass). David Hurley is the eldest member of the group, having been a member since 1990, and with 25 years of experience, he directs the group with his knowledge and expertise. The concert in All Saints’ lasted over an hour and a half, and the audience was entertained every minute. The King’s Singers’ ability to blend smoothly and hit every pitch correctly was top notch. Hendricks Stowe (C’18) commented, “It was absolutely terrific. Perfect harmony. World class a cappella.” Sewanee is incredibly fortunate to have the King’s Singers perform (it being the 4th time the King Singer’s have visited the campus.) “I used to be a tenor, but man these men can sing,” Professor John Reishman stated during the intermission.
The King’s Singers won the audience’s favor with their remarkable harmony, distinct pizzazz, and lovely British accents. They graciously signed CDs and programs after the concert, as well. The group is incredibly polite and fun and we are ready to welcome them back to Sewanee any time.
