An open letter to students from a C’79 alumnus

Students –

It is with no small measure of satisfaction that I learned today the University has acted to rescind the honorary degree awarded to Charlie Rose in 2016.  While the Vice Chancellor’s letter on the topic to the Sewanee community conspicuously omits mention of the principled and measured action on the part of the student body, I have no doubt that your efforts were crucial in achieving this result. You have every reason to be proud.

A critical lesson here is that those entrusted with leading us may find challenging the status quo to be impolitic, and they need an occasional forceful push in the right direction.

With pride and gratitude,

Michael Sierchio, C’79
