Friends of the Library of The University of the South invites you to attend a talk on Thursday, October 15 at 4:30 pm. in Naylor Auditorium in Gailor Hall. Professor Chris McDonough will talk about The Odyssey as it is represented in film. This talk is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library, the Classics Department, Eta Sigma Phi, and Library and Information Technology Services.
Christopher M. McDonough holds the Alderson-Tillinghast Chair in the Humanities. He teaches a wide range of courses at Sewanee, including Latin language and literature, mythology, literature in translation, and Classics in Cinema. He has been Chair of both the Department of Classical Languages and Interdisciplinary Humanities Program. His talk will focus on the representation of the Odyssey in film from his course, The Classics in Film. The course focuses on portrayals of Greek and Roman culture in film, with readings from classical and later literature in translation as well as criticism.
Chris is the executive producer of the award-winning documentary, Mine 21, which deals with a fatal coal mine explosion and its impact in Marion and Grundy counties. In 2022, he published Pontius Pilate On Screen: Sinner, Soldier, Superstar, in Edinburgh University Press’s Screening Antiquity series. McDonough is also the founding co-editor of the new American Journal of Classical Reception, published by Johns Hopkins University Press
Before coming to Sewanee in 2002, McDonough taught at Boston College, Princeton University, Harvard Divinity School, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
