Scoot Over!

Grace Vlattas, Contributing Writer

Have you ever heard someone say that “cars are dangerous”? A study by the Pew Research Center in 2024 found that approximately 50% of Americans are driving more recklessly, causing widespread worry and alarm. Sewanee, our beloved University, is not excluded by this alarm. Consequently, and sadly, students have chosen scooters as an alternative to driving on campus.

Electric scooters have taken over the sidewalks at Sewanee in a tirade of students looking for a faster way to get from place to place. Slowly infiltrating each bike station, the electric scooters are a grownup version of a Razor (luckily with less injured ankles).  It’s not hard to see the appeal in this new mode of transport.

Do you want to glide across the campus with ease? Do you want to get to class in record time? And even better, do you want to do it with automatic blue night lights? Well then, you are in luck! With killer wheels that raise the deck three inches from the ground, you can rise above even the tallest of seniors around the school. If you’re worried about the stability, the balance and the handlebars are wide and comfortable. The scooters are accident free, apart from running into pedestrians.

A student was witnessed wiping out in front of McClurg and took it great! However, the steering is even better for riding around your dorms when the hallways get too long! No wonder there are so many wall dents in Cleveland. This product is sponsored by satisfied customers like your RA, your history professor and the entire football team.

All in all, the scooters do help many students get to classes on time and complete their tasks throughout the day, despite the frequent teasing the transportation might receive. They provide a good and cost-effective alternative to bikes or even cars, and no one can likely deny how cool the blue lights look in the dark. The only thing to keep in mind is checking your shoulder while walking to class. You never know when a scooter might zoom past you!
