After starting the volleyball season off with a record number of wins, the Lady Tigers suffered tough conference losses against Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern. On Saturday, September 28, the Lady Tigers faced off against Millsaps for the second time this season. Millsaps beat Sewanee in five games at the Birmingham-Southern Invitational on September 7. Ready for a rematch, Sewanee was hoping to return the favor during Conference play.
In spite of their efforts, Sewanee lost to Millsaps in four sets. Millsaps won the first set of the match 25-17. Sewanee rallied to take the second set 25-19, but lost momentum and the next two sets 18-25 and 20-25.
Co-captain and outside hitter Jamie Sue Wilson (C’15) scored 18 points from attacks Millsaps failed to return (kills), outside hitter Diamond Stewart (C’17) had an impressive 12 kills, and libero Jamie Kosman (C’16) had a total of 22 digs.
“Despite our loss, I think the game was a step in the rightdirection for us,” said Wilson. “We played as a team and fought hard for every point. We’re still a relatively young team, so we’re still growing and every game we play shows improvement!” The next day, the Lady Tigers suited up against Birmingham-Southern for the first time this season. Birmingham-Southern won in five sets, 27-25, 16-25, 25-14, 20-25, and 15-10.
Outside hitters Wilson and Stewart led the team in kills for the match, with Wilson scoring 15 and Stewart scoring 12. Middle blocker Kayla Sewell (C’15) had 8 kills, and Kosman had 19 digs.
“I think we played well at times but that we need to work on our overall consistency,” right-side hitter Maggie Stanford (C’16) said about the match. “We don’t need to worry because our time is coming.”
The team is showing a lot of promise and time will tell how much they have grown since last year. “I hope that we do well in conference and are playing our best by the time the tournament comes in November!” defensive specialist Sarah Jayne Sutton (C’ 17) said.
The team’s overall record is 11-6, and conference record is 1-4 with upcoming conference matches against Hendrix and Rhodes on Saturday and Sunday, October 5-6.
