On March 1, the Sewanee Tiger Equestrian Team headed north to the Murray State IHSA Horse Show in Murray, KY. The Murray State show presented the Tigers with some challenges, such as horses trained in different styles, less than ideal weather conditions, and extremely early start times. However, in typical Tiger fashion, the team stayed strong, worked hard, supported each other and ultimately overcame those challenges to finish third out of nine large teams.
The Tigers had a good first day at the show, with several top finishes. Megan Hopson (C’17) had a beautiful first place finish in the Advanced Walk Trot Canter, and will thus go on to the IHSA Regional Show. Sara Parks (C’16) and Leslie Gooodman (C’17) both had second place finishes. Parks found her red ribbon in Novice Fences while Goodman finished behind teammate Hopson in the Advanced Walk Trot Canter. Helena Kaminsky (C’17) took home the blue ribbon in Beginner Walk Trot Canter, allowing her to move up to Advanced Walk Trot Canter. The rest of Day One saw various Tiger finishes within the top five, in competitions such as Novice Flat, Open Flat, Open Fences and Intermediate Fences.
Day Two in Kentucky opened similarly to Day One: with Tiger success. Kathryn Miller (C’17)earned first place in both the Novice Fences and the Novice Flat competitions. Miller was awarded theHigh Point Rider of the Day award. Mary Marshall Fariss (C’17) from High Point, NC, also received first place in her division of Novice Flat in addition to her third place in the Novice Fences. Kaminsky debuted in the Advanced Walk Trot Canter on Day Two and finished third. Several team members will be heading to the IHSA Regional Show on March 7 in Maryville, Tenn.
