The Sewanee Purple’s Athlete of the Week is Meghan Mulhern (C’18). Mulhern, from Annapolis, Maryland, is a member of the Sewanee Swimming and Diving team who has recently capped off an amazing season. Mulhern made the podium 20 times over the course of the season , winning races at the Igloo Invitational (200 Yard Freestyle Relay, 500 Yard Freestyle, 800 Yard Freestyle Relay, 200 Yard Freestyle), Rhodes at Sewanee (500 Yard Freestyle), Transylvania at Sewanee (1000 Yard Freestyle, 100 Yard Fly, 400 Yard Freestyle Relay), and the Southern Athletics Association (SAA) Championships (500 Yard Freestyle, 1650 Yard Freestyle) for her second and third SAA championship after winning last year’s 1650 Yard Freestyle. She also, alongside teammate Caty Hueske (C’17) earned a place on the SAA Swimming and Diving All-Conference First Team.
With Mulhern’s success, Sewanee stays in the realm of winning the SAA Championship next year. However, that effort will be without Hueske, who won one race at the SAA Championships, and is a member of Mulhern’s relay team alongside Ashley Krueger (C’18) and Emily Gay (C’17). Mulhern informed The Purple that she “for sure” plans to swim again for her senior year and to defend her titles, saying that she “can’t wait for an amazing senior year”. She also said that she feels “thrilled, excited, and honored to have won another SAA title. I have been swimming competitively for more than 15 years and it’s always so rewarding when my hard work pays off. I would like to thank my coach, my teammates, and my family and friends. Without their advice, love, and support, I never could have done it. They make it all worth it.”
Every issue, Pryor will feature an athlete that has shown exceptional ability in recent games.
