The #17 Sewanee women’s tennis team defeated Piedmont College and Hanover College in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader to stay undefeated.
Sewanee had no issue handling Piedmont, 9-0, in the team’s first match. In singles, the Tigers impressively went undefeated without needing a third set. The Tigers went on to take doubles with ease, partners Abbie Vaughn (C’20) and Meredith Heitland (C’18) leading the way.
Following a quick turnaround, Sewanee was back on the court to face Hanover. The Panthers came into the match riding on an eight-match winning streak looking to further their run. The Tigers paid no attention to this, though, as they crushed any upset hopes easily winning 8-1.
In large part due to a spectacular three-set performance by Taylor Sprouse (C’20), Sewanee was able to go undefeated once again in the singles department before taking two of three in doubles highlighted by Sara Thompson (C’19) and Haley Tucker’s (C’19) shutout of Hanover’s Alana Feeley and Caroline Millard.
It was indeed a very successful weekend for the Tigers. The defending Southern Athletic Association champions will conclude their six-match homestand against Lagrange and Transylvania on February 24 and 25 before moving on to play in the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Championship.
“The team is looking forward to this weekend against Lagrange and Transylvania to see how we have improved on what we need to work on from our matches against Piedmont and Hanover,” Vaughn said. “We will use these matches to prepare for our ITA National Championship on March 2-4 in Chattanooga.”
