Abby Young (C’ 22), a forward on the Sewanee Women’s Basketball team, out of Maryville, TN, is the athlete of the week after having consecutively tremendous performances. The games were part of a road trip weekend in Memphis, TN at Rhodes on Friday and in Conway, Arkansas at Hendrix on Sunday. Despite the team’s 51-76 defeat by Rhodes, Young dropped 14 points, recorded 2 steals, grabbed 2 rebounds, and dished 3 assists while shooting 44 percent of shots from the field. To follow up her great performance, Young scored a career-high of 17 points in the last-second overtime win against Hendrix. She furthered the lead for Sewanee after knocking down two clutch free throws with two minutes left on the clock to make it 69-66. A few possessions later, after Sewanee and Hendrix traded baskets to keep the game up for grabs, with Sewanee leading by one point, Young splashed a monumental three, pushing the lead to four with approximately a minute remaining.

Sewanee went on to win it’s first SAA conference game this season against Hendrix, with a score of 76-73 behind Young’s career-high 9 rebounds, 17 points, and 3 steals with 3 assists.

After the cancellation of the Sewanee Women’s Basketball season last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Young is on her way to having her best season at Sewanee. Young is averaging a career-high of 9 points per game, 3 assists per game, and 4 rebounds per game this season. Young, the SAA Academic Honor Roll and Order of the Gown member, is looking to finish off her tremendous final season by surpassing the 500 career points milestone, which she is 49 points away from, while hoping to make a deep run in her final SAA conference tournament at the end of the season.
