As homelessness rates increase, Housing Sewanee Inc. lays foundations for the future home owners

Jamie-Anne McKinney, Contributing Writer

In the South Cumberland Plateau, where affordable housing remains out of reach for many families, the nonprofit Housing Sewanee, Inc. (HSI) works to change that reality one home at a time. The demand for safe and stable housing continues to rise across the region, reflecting a broader crisis in Southeast Tennessee where homelessness has increased by 12%  in recent years. HSI responds to this growing need by building homes and creating opportunities for people to regain a sense of security and independence. Rather than repairing existing structures, volunteers transform empty lots into safe and dependable housing for those who need it most. Day by day, volunteers raise walls and set roofs to turn what was once just a patch of land into a place a family can finally call home.

For future homeowners, the impact extends far beyond the physical structure itself. A home built through HSI represents long term stability and dignity along with the chance for a fresh start. Through partnerships with these families, HSI helps create a path toward balance and self-sufficiency, ensuring that each home carries meaning far beyond its walls: restoring hope and strengthening the community as a whole.

At the center of this work are the volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to making these homes possible. Individuals from all backgrounds come together with a shared purpose, contributing their efforts to something larger than themselves. Volunteers assist with a wide range of tasks, from framing and roofing to problem solving on site, gaining hands-on experience in construction and practical skills along the way. Some also help design low energy and water efficient solutions, helping reduce long term costs for families and making each home more sustainable. This combination of teamwork and learning creates an environment where people not only give back but also grow personally and professionally.

One of the most impactful aspects of volunteering with HSI is the accessibility. No prior experience is required, making it possible for anyone with a willingness to help to get involved. Flexible opportunities are available throughout the week, allowing volunteers to contribute in ways that fit their schedules. Whether someone can dedicate a few hours or commit to regular involvement, every effort plays a role in moving these projects forward. In addition to individual volunteers, groups such as fraternities and sororities are encouraged to participate, creating opportunities for collective service and shared impact.

As housing challenges continue across the South Cumberland Plateau, the work of Housing Sewanee, Inc. remains essential. Rising rent, limited wages and a shortage of affordable housing have left many families struggling to find stability, with local resources often unable to meet the growing demand. Each home that is built represents more than just a completed project. It reflects the dedication of volunteers, the resilience of families and a shared belief that everyone deserves a safe place to live. By coming together to address a critical need, the community is not only constructing houses but also building stronger foundations for the future. Through continued support and volunteer involvement, HSI helps ensure that more families have access to the stability and opportunity that a home provides, laying the groundwork for lasting change across the region.
