Dear Readers,
I feel strange writing this letter as a senior. Since I stepped onto campus as a first-year, people have told me that college would be over in a blink of an eye. I felt overwhelmed from the onslaught of homework and new environments, and I would blink my eyes furiously at them. They would laugh, which was my goal.
Unfortunately, it turns out all that blinking worked, and I won’t work for the paper forever. But, now that I’m working with an incredible and talented staff, I want to take advantage of the present while I’m here. I’d like to highlight some newcomers: Junior Editor Gwen Domine, Features Editor Hatch McNabb, Business Manager Meade Cogswell and interim Layout Editor Meghan Jordan. A warm welcome to The Sewanee Purple!
Our first issue of the semester will interest anyone. I encourage you to read Opinions Editor Harper Rzepczynski’s article on Dolly Parton’s legacy and Sports Editor Irene Boehm’s coverage of a football coaching family coming to train the Tigers. As is tradition, Executive Editor Sanjana Priyonti and I interviewed the Vice-Chancellor Rob Pearigen to learn his takes on and plans for the new academic year.
To end the letter, I want to remind people of how college newspapers make a difference. Recently, a Purple article, written about former Director of Greek Life Donald Abels, inspired a former LSU student journalist to file a public records case against his university. This case reminds me that The Purple has impacts not only on the Domain but around the South. Student newspapers need to stand up for what is right, and I am proud of the legacy I carry when I bear the Editor-in-Chief name.
