Sewanee’s first Tour De Greeks drew nearly 250 new students for guided visits to every fraternity and sorority house on Sept. 6.
The walking tour, developed by sorority and fraternity leaders on the University’s Greek Council, had groups of five to 10 freshmen and transfer students being guided for short greetings and peeks inside each house.
The tour ended with a block party potluck on Mississippi Avenue. Each Greek organization brought favorite dishes and offered them on long tables along the avenue. Tour goers got to sample homemade layer cakes, grilled hot dogs, a signature chicken dish that disappeared in minutes, a chicken dip so good that the students who made it couldn’t quit eating it before the event, and even a cauldron of jambalaya so big it required a trailer to haul it from a fraternity house.
Council leaders said the tour is part of the council’s year-long effort of strengthen community among all Greek organizations and Sewanee students.
