Women’s lacrosse beats Oglethorphe

The Sewanee women’s lacrosse team opened its season with a 19-3 win over Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Oglethorpe, Saturday, at Oglethorpe Field.

Known the past couple of seasons for their balanced offense, the Tigers showed their ability to distribute and score against the Stormy Petrels.

Overall, 12 student-athletes finished with points which included 10 Tigers that added goals and nine different players that had an assist.

Kate Riddle (C’16) led the way for Sewanee, adding four goals and one assist. Payton Fields (C’16), who finished with three goals and two assists, Kit Sommi (C’18), who also had three goals and two assists, and Sydney Beldock (C’19), who added three goals, joined her in the double-digit scoring column.

Additionally, Catherine Crigler (C’19), Kelly Thomsen (C’19), Brooke Winfield (C’19), Relly King (C’18), Alden Woolford (C’18), and Hannah Tompkins (C’19) each added a goal.

On defense, Brianna Young (C’19) finished with three saves while starter Crawford Horan (C’17) earned the win.

Also defensively, Sewanee forced 25 turnovers and outshot OU 40-14.

The Tigers quickly return to action with an 11:00 a.m. (EST) match at Piedmont, Sunday.
